Paolo Ghia, MD, PhD, is a professor of medical oncology at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milano, Italy, and is the deputy chairman of the Division of Experimental Oncology at the affiliated hospital, where he also is the director of the Strategic Research Program on CLL, including a dedicated unit for phase 1 studies. Dr. Ghia received his medical degree from the University of Turin in Italy and received his doctorate working at the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland, studying B lymphocyte development. He then studied the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, particularly of follicular lymphoma, at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Ghia’s research interest is the study of the molecular and cellular mechanisms acting in the natural history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), including monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL); and he has published over 330 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals on these topics. He is president of the European Research Initiative on CLL (ERIC) and a member of the International Workshop on CLL (iwCLL). He coauthors the European Hematology Association (EHA)–European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines for CLL treatment and the ERIC recommendations on IGHV, TP53, and minimal residual disease (MRD) analyses; and is an associate editor for CLL at HemaSphere, the official journal of EHA.
